Still life painting – advanced principles

This class looks at traditional layering methods for still life painting, with a particular emphasis on dealing with advanced subjects such as patterned drapery, atmospheric perspective and complex lighting scenarios. Students will complete three still life paintings over the term.

This class is a self directed oil painting class. Each student decides the scope of their own project and is guided in determining aspects of their own personal style and process. We will look at compositional principles, choosing lighting and viewpoint in line with your aims and establishing a process that prioritises the things that are most important to you in your painting. Other aspects of painting such as colour mixing and controlling the materiality of the paint will be addressed as they relate to specific scenarios of works in progress. This class is a great chance for students with some experience to refine their own individual approach.
